What is it that we are all looking for, up at the sky, out of
backlit windows, through doorways, down the camera lens, in that double-take,
and out of corners of our eyes? It feels like that elusive something is always
just out of reach, melting away while the eye focuses.
Using loose ink drawings and low-res
photography, I record incidental observations of everyday experiences, focusing
on objects or sights that appear insignificant, obscure and idiosyncratic.
These serve as starting points for cyclic processes through drawing,
printmaking and painting in order to erode the cultural context and values we
attach to visual imagery through social conditioning. Each cycle wears away
prior meaning and new ones surface to fill the void. The resulting works
feature abstract, organic vacillating forms which resist direct interpretation.
